The shock also exhibits a very consistent action throughout the stroke even under extreme heat and use. Out on the trail, it seemed to be a little more plush than on the Trance, whether this was due to the tune, the linkage design or the extra stroke length x57 was not clear. More Information. Now, I have been running this shock for just over km, and was keen to find out for myself if the shock could live up to its reputation. Insert the bushes, and bolt into place. It is starting to feel like it could do with a second strip down and lube, but luckily that is an easy job. In Pedal, the action is perfect for undulating trails and trail centres, great for climbing and when you do not need big hit absorption. It's possible that the shock is just over damped for lighter riders, or progressive linkage designs such as found on the Trance. View all posts. After just over 2 years the damper totally failed, air mixing with the oil.

Over the last 6 months this shock has been tested in many different conditions, mud, rain, shine and over all sorts of aggressive terrain. It is starting to feel like it could do with a second strip down and lube, but luckily that is an easy job.
Adding 4 bands improved things a little, but it was still impossible to get full travel unless running huge amounts of sag. In Lock, the bike is not totally locked but is very firm under pedaling while retaining a firmer, but still consistent, suspension action to reduce any big hits. As the "open" setting was still fairly firm, the "pedal" setting was rarely used and seems a little redundant.
Looking inside the shock, the Monarch Plus RC3 uses the new Rapid Recovery technology, allowing it to return faster between hits, keep high in its travel and preserve the bikes geometry.

No performance loss was noticed from the shaft wear, it was still disappointing and from speaking to the local bike shop it's an issue they have seen quite a few times. As the "open" setting was still fairly firm, the "pedal" setting was rarely used and seems a little redundant. The shock also responds well to heat build up, remaining unfazed by long alpine descents, without any noticeable harshness.
Now, the Monarch RT3 and Monarch Plus RC3 look to raise that bar even further shocks that are custom-tuned for specific, highly-popular.
The Rapid recovery seems to work very well, the shock returns faster than the standard Monarch and the performance is excellent in fast, repeated hits. Servicing In Rockshoxs service guide for the Monarch Plus they recommended to "Replace all seals hours use or annually", but we would say a can service really helps keep the shock running smooth, and every couple of months regreasing the seals and cleaning out any dirt was done.

It didn't seem to get any worse or really affect the shock in any way but it's still annoying. It still never really felt buttery smooth, and wallowed a little on steep climbs. I have performed one air can service in that time and added 4 volume reducers 20 minute job to provide a more progressive feel to the high volume shock.

Small bump was passable, and the shock offered a nice firm feeling to pump against, but it never felt like it dealt with roots and small rocks very well. I have performed one air can service in that time and added 4 volume reducers 20 minute job to provide a more progressive feel to the high volume shock.
Performing the can service only takes around 20 minutes and only really needs a pick to carefully pull out the seals :. The shock also responds well to heat build up, remaining unfazed by long alpine descents, without any noticeable harshness.
